On December 3rd, 2023, Sunday, the South American IOGKF Gasshuku 2023 has ended. So, what can we say about the event?
Before we begin, let's understand what a gasshuku is and its importance to the IOGKF. Gasshukus (合宿), are gatherings where those interested in something come together to live for a period with a specific focus. In our case, it is Goju-Ryu Karate.
The spirit of gasshukus is for people to coexist in the same place, waking up, training, eating, having fun, and sleeping in a single environment, in an immersive routine focused on karate. Currently, this type of IOGKF event takes place for four hours, where we karatedokas can train hard and get some 'calibration' regarding the pattern of the style. The hallmark of these events is an atmosphere of congregation, respect, and friendship.
IOGKF Gasshukus are always very special, a meeting of old friends... practitioners who marvel at meeting international chief instructors and the leadership of our organization, and new friendships that emerge. It's three days where many teachings are shared!
The 2023 South American Gasshuku took place in the city of Santiago, Chile. We had an excellent structure to train at the National Olympic Training Center. We, karate practitioners from IOGKF of different nationalities, genders, and ages, had three intensive days of instruction and practice. The chief instructors shared their knowledge with practitioners of many different levels.

It was a remarkable event, three days, four continuous hours of training per day, with about 200 participants who counted with the presence of the top leadership of IOGKF: T. Nakamura our Chief Instructor, Henrik Larsen Vice-Chief Instructor, and Jorge Monteiro the IOGKF Advisor, among other well-known instructors from South America and Europe.
In the end, every drop of sweat from each participant was transformed into satisfaction. The joy of being there was evident in every participant, a mood crowned by the presentations of various delegations at the end of the event!
